In recent times, I've had to deal with some devastating news about my loved ones. I recently lost my brother-in-law suddenly. Turns out it wasn't so sudden after all. He was dying a slow death and the truth is that his life could ahve been prolonged if there was early detection.

Just as in chess, where every move counts, proactive health management is crucial for a long and fulfilling life. Let's explore some essential annual health checks that every woman should incorporate into her health strategy:
Pelvic Exam: A pelvic exam is a crucial screening tool for detecting gynecological issues such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, or early signs of reproductive cancers. It's recommended for women of all ages, especially those over 21.
Mammogram: Mammograms are vital for the early detection of breast cancer. Women aged 40 and older should undergo regular mammograms to catch any abnormalities before they progress.
Pap Smear and HPV Test: Pap smears and HPV tests are essential for cervical cancer screening. These tests can detect abnormal cells or the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated.
Vitamin D Status: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone health and immune function. A simple blood test can determine your vitamin D levels and help guide supplementation if necessary.
Cholesterol Screening: Monitoring cholesterol levels is essential for assessing heart health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. High cholesterol levels increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Diabetes Screening: Early detection of diabetes can help prevent complications and manage the condition effectively. Individuals with risk factors such as obesity, family history, or high blood pressure should undergo diabetes screening regularly.
Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC provides valuable information about your overall health, including red and white blood cell counts, hemoglobin levels, and platelet count. It can help identify various conditions, including anaemia and infections.
I think of these as essential health checks that should be included in our annual routine. I am implore you to take control of your health and make informed decisions about your well-being. Just as in chess, where strategy and foresight are key, proactive health management empowers us to navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience.
